In 1897 Rudolf Steiner became an owner, chief editor, and essay contributor to the literary journal "Magazin für Literatur", where he hoped to interest readers in his freedom philosophy.

Steiner Essays In English
Here are a few of Steiner's published essays that have been translated to English.
Theosophists (Steiner criticises theosophists and spiritualists for waging war on science and mocks their claims of inner spiritual experience)
The Social Question (the Philosophy of Freedom is written in the spirit of Darwinism, but the laws of human development are different than the laws of nature governing the animal and plant kingdoms)
Catholicism And Progress (Steiner defends the right of free thinking to question Christian truths revealed by divine revelation such the personality of the Creator. Thinking must be free and not be required to provide the proof that the Catholic belief in revelation has unconditional truth.)
The Desire Of The Jews For Palestine (Steiner calls the Zionist movement an enemy of Judaism, and says that accusing people of anti-Semitism causes division between Jew and non-Jew)
Contemporary High School Reform (Everything taught at the high school should be filled with the spirit of the present which is the scientific worldview. This would spare us discussions about the relationship between religion and science, of faith and knowledge, etc. Teach the youth by saying: this is how we look at the world; watch how it presents itself to you. We should awaken abilities, not deliver beliefs.)
Old And New Moral Concepts (The basic feature of progress today is moving away from Revelation, mystical vision, or metaphysical speculation that was supposed to lead to knowledge from higher beings to striving to find the means to explain the world within ourselves. Steiner criticises moral action based upon duty.)
"Human Compassion" A contribution to the foundation of scientific ethics (Steiner approves of Bösch’s use of science to understand human compassion. When we perceive an emotional expression (cry - trembling, etc.) in another person, a corresponding emotional expression also occurs in us. This is living in the feelings of others which can lead to an unselfish act.)
Adolf Gerecke "The Hopelessness Of Morality" (Gerecke is trying to show that there is not a special spiritual addition to the physical nature of man. The world-view of materialism knows no difference between man and a machine. Steiner says the future will see man's ethical life emerge from the same source from which natural events spring. Moral laws will only be considered as special cases of natural laws. Therefore, they will no longer be sought in abstract norms, but in concrete individual life.)
Moltke As Philosopher (Moltke was military chief of the German General Staff. Steiner discusses a general's worldview and shows how it must necessarily lack the feeling for individuality and for the personal freedom of man. The psychologist knows that every person who has a certain profession makes the profession the center of his world judgment. In Moltke's profession he experiences mathematical-mechanical laws. Missing is the world of freedom.)
General Assembly of the Goethe Society (Steiner writes a report on the meeting of the Goethe Society)
Maximilian Harden "Apostate" (We have driven the worship of the "principle" to disgust. We did not care about the individual, but whether it was a liberal or conservative, national or cosmopolitan, materialistic or idealistic. Many are only happy if they hear or read what they themselves realize. Others say to such things: lost time.)
A "Society for Ethical Culture" (The "Society for Ethical Culture" firmly believe in the backward conception of a common morality for all. This is the core of Kant's moral teaching. It is the death of all individual life.)
A "Society For Ethical Culture" in Germany (Many are tired of talking about what we should and should not do. They demand insight into the world course. If they have it, then they know how to behave in the world. But there is not a universal human morality. Every people, every age, and every individual has its own morality).
Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxony (Steiner speaks appreciatively at the passing of the Grand Duchess who was a benefactor and founder of the Goethe Archive)

What follows is a list of the essays written by Rudolf Steiner during his Philosophy Of Freedom period (1887-1900).
"The essays in this volume are divided into four main sections: The first part contains Rudolf Steiner's contributions to the daily politics of the "Deutsche Wochenschrift" (Vienna 1888), which represented the national interests of Germany in Austria.
The second part contains cultural and contemporary articles, which Rudolf Steiner wrote especially for the "Magazin für Literatur" published by him in Berlin.
In the third part, Rudolf Steiner's contributions on Nietzsche and the Nietzsche Archive are compiled.
The fourth part contains smaller book reviews and various other contributions."
