The Four Foundation Books of Rudolf Steiner’s Path

The first three Steiner books explain Steiner's epistemology and provide a basis for the
'
The Philosophy of Freedom'. The Philosophy of Freedom itself requires more of a contemplative approach.

Rudolf Steiner’s path begins with the study of the inorganic world. In 1879 Rudolf Steiner entered the Technical University in Vienna to study mathematics and science, which he later acknowledged gave him a better basis for a spiritual conception of the world than he would have gained from a study of the humanities. He also studied the philosophies of Kant, Fichte, and Hegel and the natural scientific writings of Goethe.

A new kind of thinking was required to comprehend the organic world. In Goethe he recognized one who was able to perceive the spiritual in nature. In 1883 Steiner introduces Goethe’s scientific work in the book Goethean Science. As Goethe was unable to explicitly conceptualize what his philosophy of life was, Steiner filled this need by publishing The Theory of Knowledge Implicit in Goethe's World-Conception in 1886.

Goethe could not carry cognition of spirit beyond spirit-as-phenomenally-apparent in external nature. Steiner went on to create his own philosophy that established a sound basis for extending scientific investigation beyond the boundaries of the sense perceptible, by means of pure thinking. This is in contrast to many approaches to the spirit which suppress or neglect the thinking faculty.

In 1892 he first presented an outline of his ideas in his doctoral dissertation, Truth and Knowledge, which bore the sub-title ‘Prelude to a Philosophy of Freedom’. It was 1894 when The Philosophy of Freedom was published, and the content which had formed the center of his life's striving was placed before the world. He called the result of his research "anthroposophy," centering on "knowledge produced by the higher self in man."

The Philosophy of Freedom is much more than philosophy, it describes the experiences of Rudolf Steiner on his path to freedom. His report now becomes a map for our inner journey to the source of free thinking and impulses to individual ethical action. Steiner consistently recommended one path for the cultivation of the new cognitive capacities appropriate to our contemporary culture and current stage of human evolution. His intention was for the study of The Philosophy of Freedom to be the inner schooling to discipline thinking. The Philosophy of Freedom is written in a special way so that the proper study of the book itself is the most effective thought-training exercise available for the cultivation of pure thinking. This path is accessible to anyone with the “goodwill” to undertake it.
